Problems:

Problem 1

Determine value angle fi skrewing polarization plane for linear polarizated light a cross by magnetic layer in Internet Experiment. As a help in solving this problem we propose method described on WWW page: Investigate Faraday Effect - determine skrew angle for polarization plane in magnetic field.

Problem 2

Check Malus Law. You should record signal U from the light detector as a function of angle alfa1 (polarizer position) and compare experimental data with theoretical dependence. As a help in solving this problem we propose the method described on our WWW page: Checking Malus Law

Problem 3

Describe magnetization process in magnetic layer. You should record the histeresis loop and a few pictures of the magnetic structure in the optimal polarizer position. As a help in solving this problem, we propose the method described on our WWW page: Magnetization process.

Problem 4*

Determine two material parameters in a magnetic layer:

  • Ms - Magnetization of the sample
  • Sw - the energy of the domain wall

To solve this problem we suggest determing the period bettween dark and light of magnetic domains and initial susceptibility - chi0. Is is known thickness of magnetic layer of the sample si h = 10 micrometers. As a help in solving this problem we suggest going to the description of magnetic structures on the WWW page

Problem 5*

Obtain black and white images of the magnetic structure (without magnetic firlds) with the best aproximation of the structura pattern. You should record the image/images of the magnetic structure, and use numerical processing for this image. As a help in solving this problem we suggest going to the description of magnetic structure on our WWW page: We await original solutions from competition participants. Solutions should include:

  • Input image/images data used for solution of the problem
  • Output image in black and white
  • Description of the applied procedure and a copy of the software used

* asterisked problems are difficult
